Straight Answers
Do I need a permit to replace a door in New Jersey?
Not when the new door goes in the same opening. NJ's construction code lists replacing any window or door in the same opening as ordinary maintenance, so no permit and no inspection. Cutting a new opening or enlarging one is different: that's framing, which needs a permit, and we'll tell you so up front.
Slab or prehung: which should I buy?
If the existing frame is square and the hinges are sound, a slab is cheaper and faster. If the frame is racked, rotted, or the door has never closed right, a prehung unit fixes the frame and the door in one go. Send us a photo of the door and the gap at the top and we'll tell you which one before you go to the store.
Can you fix a door that sticks without replacing it?
Usually. Most sticking doors are a hinge screw that has pulled out of the jamb, a strike plate that has drifted, or seasonal swelling that needs the edge planed. That's a Visit-sized job; we typically get two or three doors closing right in one stop.
Do you install smart locks?
Yes. Battery smart locks and keypad deadbolts replace a standard deadbolt with no wiring. Video doorbells go on the existing doorbell wiring or run on battery. Replacing a doorbell is ordinary maintenance under NJ code; running new wiring for one is not, and we'd tell you.
